The description validates my point “the same drawn-out intro, hyperactive buildup, watery bridge and pounding reentry over and over again”. Its structure is typically more complex than other popular forms of music.

I just wrote a presentation for our sales department to explain the difference between contemporary (my show) and Smooth (the Fulltime smoothie here) so they could explain it to clients who often assume that all instrumental music is the same (which is like considering Celine Dion and Alanis Morisette to be the same just because they are both female vocalists) and that is pretty much the short version of what the presentation said.

R & R started in the late ’40s and early ‘50s as a fusion of the music genre popular for the era; gospel, folk, blues, country & western, and jazz. This broad category includes symphonies, chamber works, operas, art songs, experimental and electronic works from the fringes of the avant-garde, and other forms of “classical” music. I had just heard the song "Oh What a Night" on the radio in NYC.
